How I work

The best part of my job happens before anyone writes code. I sit with the people who do the work, learn how the process actually runs, and map out the flow. Requirements gathering is not a formality to me. Half the problems I have been asked to fix over the years were not code problems at all. They were the result of a system that was designed without anyone asking how the business really operates.

Once the design is clear, the build follows more easily. I write C# and ASP.NET Core, design the data model, and put the whole thing on Azure. I care about the boring qualities: clear boundaries, sensible error handling, and code the next developer can read without me in the room.

Design the flow first. Write the code second. Most of the cost of software is paid after it ships, so make it easy to change.

Where I have spent my time

A large part of my career has been integration work: connecting systems that were never designed to talk to each other, and doing it in a way that survives real traffic and real failures. In recent years that has mostly meant Azure Integration Services — Logic Apps, API Management, Service Bus and Event Grid — along with the messaging patterns that keep those pieces reliable.

I have also led people. At FIS I managed a team of four to six developers as direct reports, which included performance reviews and career development, not just technical direction. I enjoy that side of the work. Helping a developer get unstuck is a good use of an afternoon.

I have a strong interest in system design. My working knowledge is solid and I am steadily building more hands-on experience with it, which is part of why I keep building things of my own.

What I am learning

I am studying for Microsoft Exam AI-200, Developing AI Cloud Solutions on Azure. The reason is practical rather than decorative: I want to design and build AI solutions that solve real business problems, automate the repetitive parts of a process, cut cost, and give small teams capacity they did not have before. That is the direction I am taking my work.

Alongside that I am starting to contribute to open source projects and write about what I build. Doing the work in public keeps me honest.

Outside work

I am building BusyBay, a booking platform for automotive workshops, mostly in evenings and weekends. It is the project where I get to make every decision myself and live with all of them, which turns out to be an excellent teacher.
